As Europe swelters under record-breaking heat, cooling products from east China’s Zhejiang Province, from ice cream machines to portable air conditioners, are seeing soaring demand across the region.

From January to May this year, Ningbo City in Zhejiang exported over 57 million units of cooling appliances such as fans and air conditioners, with a year-on-year growth of 6.5 percent, and the total value reached 8.29 billion yuan (about 1.22 billion U.S. dollars), according to an official of Yuyao Customs.

At a home appliance enterprise in Ningbo, a batch of ice cream machines has rolled off the production line and is ready to ship to Europe.

The company's manager said the newly developed model cuts operating time by 90 percent compared with traditional machines, offering significant energy savings, a key selling point in Europe where electricity prices are high. Since its launch, more than 20,000 units have already been sold in the European market.

"Now we have received orders from Germany, the United Kingdom and Spain. We anticipate that we will continue to receive orders of over 100,000 units of this product in the second half of this year," Yu Hanfen, vice general manager of Ningbo Borine Electric Appliance Company.

Mobile air conditioners are also in high demand. At a factory in Yuyao, Ningbo, production lines are running at full capacity, with 60 percent of output bound for Europe. In past years, export orders would have tapered off by this time, but this year customers are still rushing in with additional requests.

"Our production schedule has been set for the end of August. The export figures for this year are very promising. In the first half of this year, our overall output has increased by 23 percent," said Fang Zhihao, sales director of Ningbo Fuda Intelligent Technology Company.

Smaller cooling goods from Zhejiang, such as portable towels and handheld fans, are also seeing brisk sales in Europe’s overheated market.

"Compared to April, the export demand has increased by around 30 percent. Our daily output of wet wipes is about 160,000 packs," said Huang Tao, a merchant at the Yiwu International Trade Market.

"Orders for this product have skyrocketed recently, and the factory can't keep up with the demand. When I checked with them last time, they said there were still roughly 70,000 to 80,000 units pending production before ours," said Jin Qingxian, another merchant at the Yiwu International Trade Market.

According to statistics from Yiwu Customs, in the first five months of this year, the export value of electric fans from Yiwu reached 2.11 billion yuan, up 20.9 percent year on year.
