A record number of spectators turned out for the 2026 Formula E Shanghai E-Prix over the weekend, with attendance more than doubling from last year, highlighting the growing appeal of the all-electric racing series in China.

The two-day event at the SAIC Shanghai International Circuit concluded on Sunday, attracting more than 43,000 spectators, the highest attendance in the history of the Formula E Shanghai race and roughly double the figure recorded in 2025.

Fans began arriving hours before racing got underway, filling the event's interactive fan zone and exhibition areas early in the morning.

"I think bringing children here gives them a chance to experience the atmosphere in person. The atmosphere is really fantastic," said a mother.

The record turnout was also reflected in the bustling exhibition area, where exhibitors said visitor numbers exceeded expectations.

"Many visitors were already lining up at our booth at 7 or 8 o'clock in the morning," said a tire exhibitor.

This year's Shanghai round also offered fans a rare spectacle as persistent rain over both race days kept the cars' rear rain lights illuminated throughout the races, a sight seldom seen in Formula E. Wet conditions also made racing more challenging for drivers.

The event concluded with Brazilian veteran Lucas di Grassi, 42, staging a last-lap overtake in Sunday's second race to claim victory, bringing a memorable finish to his final Formula E appearance in China ahead of his planned retirement at the end of the season.
