Thousands of Spanish fans poured onto the streets of Madrid on Tuesday night to celebrate their team's impressive FIFA World Cup semi-final victory over France, as excitement now builds over the possibility of winning another coveted title in Sunday's showpiece final.
The famous Plaza de Colon in the Spanish capital has served as the epicenter of festivities in recent weeks while screening matches throughout the World Cup. Due to the demand, organizers decided to increase the capacity of the popular fan zone for the semi-final clash to allow more people to soak up the atmosphere.
With free entry for up to 6,000 people, the square opened its doors hours before the game got underway, allowing Spanish supporters to come together and rally behind their team.
"After all, Spain is one of the great teams, one of the best. And I think this has been proven in the previous matches," said a fan named Jaime ahead of the match.
During the countdown to kick-off, there were a host of activities, musical performances, games, and various entertainment options which whipped the crowd into a frenzy.
"The emotion of the people is contagious, and you can feel it. I think it's unbeatable. Whether you like football or not, it's the energy of the people," said Juan Maestro, another fan.
Once the match got underway, Spain delivered on the pitch, outperforming the much-fancied French team as they powered to a stunning 2-0 victory in Dallas to book their place in Sunday's final.
The current crop of players will now hope to emulate the success of the history-making 2010 squad, who secured the country's first World Cup triumph at that year's tournament held in South Africa.
The scintillating form of Spain, who are also the reigning European champions, now has thousands of Spanish fans confidently dreaming of seeing their team lift another trophy.
"There's no better way to experience a match than this. And on top of that, we won. We're in a final, after 16 years. It's incredible," said Marcos, another Spanish fan.
Spain must now await the result of the match between Argentina and England on Wednesday evening to find out who their opponent will be in the final at the New York New Jersey Stadium.
Sunday's final will mark the conclusion of the biggest ever edition of the FIFA World Cup, with a record 48 teams participating and games being played across three host nations for the first time, with matches held in the United States, Mexico and Canada.
