A Palestinian mother in Gaza has been left devastated after her only surviving son, eight-year-old Mu'taz, was shot dead while playing inside a tent in the al-Mawasi area west of Khan Younis, local sources said on Tuesday.

The boy's father and brother were killed in an Israeli airstrike last year, leaving Mu'taz as the sole remaining child. His death comes as violence has continued in Gaza despite a ceasefire that took effect in October 2025, with health authorities in Gaza reporting that over 1,110 people have been killed since the truce began.

Heartbreaking footage showed the grieving mother clutching the body of her son as she struggled to come to terms with the loss.

"Your father is gone, your brother is gone, and now you too. You are my support. By Allah, you are my support, my son. Wake up, my beloved son. Wake up, my son. Wake up, my heart. I wish the bullet had hit my heart instead of yours, my son. By Allah, I wish it had been in my heart instead of yours. May Allah have mercy on your soul. My heart, my beloved child. May Allah have mercy on your soul, my son. Who will sit beside me now, my son? My support is gone," cried the mother.

A woman close to Mu'taz's mother questioned angrily, "What did this child do wrong? What did he do to be killed? He was sitting and playing — what was his fault?"

The tragic killing has shaken the entire community, with young friends of Mu'taz also left shattered.

"You left me, my friend? You left me? I was joking with you yesterday. Just yesterday, I was still joking with you, my dear. May Allah have mercy on him," said one friend as he bade farewell.

The killing has drawn renewed attention to the fragile situation in Gaza, where civilians, particularly children, continue to bear the brunt of ongoing hostilities despite the ceasefire. The international community has repeatedly called for the protection of civilians and a lasting end to the violence.

أُصيبت أم فلسطينية في غزة بصدمة كبيرة بعد مقتل ابنها الوحيد الناجي، معتز، البالغ من العمر ثماني سنوات، برصاصةٍ أثناء لعبه داخل خيمة في منطقة المواصي بغرب خان يونس، وفقًا لما أفادت به مصادر محلية يوم الثلاثاء/14 يوليو الجاري.

وكان والد الطفل وشقيقه قد قُتلا في غارة جوية إسرائيلية قبل عام، ليصبح معتز الطفل الباقي الوحيد الذي بقي على قيد الحياة. وجاء مقتله في ظل استمرار العنف في غزة رغم وقف إطلاق النار الذي دخل حيز التنفيذ في أكتوبر 2025. وأفادت السلطات الصحية في غزة بمقتل 1110 أشخاص منذ بدء الهدنة.

وبكت الأم قائلة: "لقد رحل أبوك، ورحل أخوك، والآن أنت أيضًا. أنت سندي. والله، أنت سندي يا بني. استيقظ يا بني الحبيب. استيقظ يا بني. استيقظ يا قلبي. ليت الرصاصة أصابت قلبي بدلًا من قلبك يا بني. والله، ليت الرصاصة أصابت قلبي بدلًا من قلبك. رحم الله روحك. يا قلبي يا ولدي الحبيب. رحم الله روحك يا بني. من سيجلس بجانبي الآن يا بني؟ لقد رحل سندي."

وسألت امرأة مقربة من والدة معتز بغضب: "ما الخطأ الذي ارتكبه هذا الطفل؟ ما الذي فعله ليُقتل؟ كان جالساً يلعب - ما ذنبه؟"

لم يستطع أحد أصدقاء معتز أن يتحمل الأمر، وقال: "تركتني يا صديقي؟ تركتني؟ كنت أمزح معك بالأمس. بالأمس فقط، كنت لا أزال أمزح معك يا عزيزي. رحم الله معتز".

وأثارت عملية القتل اهتماما متجددا بالوضع الهش في غزة، حيث لا يزال المدنيون، ولا سيما الأطفال، يتحملون وطأة الأعمال العدائية المستمرة رغم وقف إطلاق النار. وقد دعا المجتمع الدولي مرارا وتكرارا إلى حماية المدنيين وإنهاء العنف بشكل دائم.

Una madre palestina en Gaza quedó desconsolada tras perder a su único hijo sobreviviente, un niño de apenas ocho años que fue abatido a tiros mientras jugaba dentro de una tienda de campaña en la zona de al-Mawasi, al oeste de Jan Yunis.

El marido y el otro hijo de la mujer murieron en un ataque aéreo israelí el año pasado, cuando el alto el fuego entre Israel y Hamás apenas había entrado en vigor en octubre de 2025.

"Tu padre ya no está, tu hermano ya no está, y ahora tú tampoco. Eres mi apoyo. Por Alá, eres mi apoyo, hijo mío. Despierta, mi hijo amado. Despierta, hijo mío. Despierta, mi corazón mío. Una amiga de la madre de Mu'taz preguntó indignada: "¿Qué hizo mal este niño? ¿Qué hizo para merecer la muerte? Estaba sentado jugando, ¿cuál fue su culpa?".

La muerte de Mu'taz también sumió a sus amigos en una profunda tristeza.

"¿Me abandonaste, amigo? ¿Me abandonaste? Ayer bromeaba contigo. Ayer mismo, todavía bromeaba contigo, querido. Que Alá tenga misericordia de él", dijo.

El asesinato de Mu'taz ha vuelto a poner de manifiesto la vulnerabilidad de la situación en Gaza, donde la población civil, especialmente los niños, sigue sufriendo las consecuencias de las hostilidades en medio del frágil alto el fuego.

Un total de 1.110 personas han fallecido y 3.599 han resultado heridas a causa de bombardeos israelíes desde el inicio del alto el fuego, informaron el martes las autoridades sanitarias de Gaza en un comunicado.
