Uganda officially declared the end of its Ebola outbreak on Tuesday, after the Ministry of Health said advances in epidemiological investigations and the fully characterized nature of the outbreak provided sufficient scientific evidence that transmission had been interrupted.

A statement quoting Health Minister Chris Baryomunsi said that Uganda has officially declared the end of the 2026 Ebola disease outbreak, saying "Today, Uganda is Ebola-free." 

It comes after what the ministry said was the discharge of the last locally transmitted patient, a Ugandan national, on June 16.  However, other media reports said a Congolese national who had sought treatment in Uganda had been discharged at a later date. 

The ministry's "Ebola free" announcement arrives before the completion of the World Health Organization's standard 42-day countdown following the discharge of the last patient in the country.

The long-standing 42-day criterion, while remaining an essential safeguard where transmission is uncertain or ongoing, should not be regarded as the only basis for declaring an outbreak over when an imported outbreak has been fully characterized and epidemiological closure conclusively demonstrated, said the ministry.

The Ministry of Health said the declaration was based on the identification of the outbreak's source, the complete reconstruction of transmission chains, the epidemiological linkage of all confirmed cases, the successful follow-up of all identified contacts, and enhanced nationwide surveillance that detected no further community transmission.

It added that Uganda would continue strengthening surveillance, maintaining preparedness, particularly in border districts, and working closely with neighboring countries. It also reassured residents, visitors and investors that the country remains safe and open for business, tourism and other socio-economic activities.

Uganda declared the outbreak on May 15 after confirming an imported Ebola case from the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The country recorded 20 confirmed cases, including 18 recoveries and two deaths.

Le ministère ougandais de la Santé a officiellement déclaré mardi la fin de l'actuelle épidémie d'Ebola, affirmant que les progrès des enquêtes épidémiologiques et la nature pleinement caractérisée de l'épidémie apportaient des preuves suffisantes du fait que la transmission avait été interrompue.

"Le ministère de la Santé est ravi d'annoncer que l'Ouganda a officiellement déclaré la fin de l'épidémie 2026 de maladie à virus Ebola. Aujourd'hui, l'Ouganda est exempt d'Ebola", selon un communiqué citant le ministre de la Santé, Chris Baryomusi.

Cette annonce a été faite avant la fin du décompte standard de 42 jours de l'Organisation mondiale de la santé (OMS) après la fin de l'hospitalisation du dernier patient. L'Ouganda a autorisé la sortie de son dernier patient atteint d'Ebola le 16 juillet, après qu'il a été testé négatif au virus.

D'après le ministère de la Santé, cette déclaration est fondée sur l'identification de la source de l'épidémie, la reconstruction complète des chaînes de transmission, l'établissement du lien épidémiologique de tous les cas confirmés, le suivi réussi de tous les contacts identifiés, et la surveillance nationale renforcée qui n'a détecté aucune nouvelle transmission communautaire.

Le critère établi de 42 jours sans nouveau cas, bien qu'il constitue une garantie essentielle là où la transmission est incertaine ou en cours, ne devrait pas être considéré comme la seule base pour déclarer la fin d'une épidémie lorsqu'une épidémie importée a été entièrement caractérisée et que la fin épidémiologique a été démontrée de façon concluante, a poursuivi le ministère.

Il a ajouté que l'Ouganda continuerait de consolider sa surveillance, de maintenir sa préparation, en particulier dans les districts frontaliers, et de travailler en étroite collaboration avec les pays voisins. En outre, il a assuré aux habitants, aux visiteurs et aux investisseurs que le pays restait sûr et ouvert aux affaires, au tourisme et aux autres activités socioéconomiques.

L'Ouganda a déclaré l'épidémie le 15 mai après avoir confirmé un cas importé d'Ebola en provenance de la République démocratique du Congo. Le pays a enregistré 20 cas confirmés, dont 18 ont guéri et deux sont décédés.
