As Typhoon Dolphin, the 13th typhoon of 2026, lashed Shanghai with powerful winds, the 1,000-tonne tuned mass damper (TMD), a device mounted in structures to reduce mechanical vibrations, inside the 632-meter Shanghai Tower swung into action.

Installed on the tower's 125th floor and suspended by 12 steel cables, the damper moves in the opposite direction of the building's motion to reduce wind-induced sway and improve stability during extreme weather.

By 16:00 on Sunday, the damper had recorded a unilateral swing of approximately 0.5 meters, effectively absorbing the building's oscillations and stabilizing the supertall structure against the onslaught of the storm.

Boasting an impressive 128 floors above ground and five levels below ground, the Shanghai Tower is the tallest skyscraper in China and the third tallest building in the world.

Typhoon Dolphin made landfall at Yuhuan of Taizhou City, east China's Zhejiang Province, at around 17:30 on Sunday, then made its second landfall at Yueqing City in east China's Zhejiang Province at around 18:40, according to the National Meteorological Center (NMC).
