Funeral rites have begun in Thailand for the victims of a school shooting on the outskirts of Bangkok that left at least nine people dead, as the nation grapples with how a teenager gained access to a firearm inside a school.

The rampage unfolded last Friday at Debsirin Nonthaburi School in Nonthaburi province on the northern outskirts of Bangkok, when a 14-year-old teenage student opened fire on campus, killing nine people and injuring several others.

Among the victims being honored is 31-year-old Thai language teacher Nanchanatphon Nakplang, who was covering a class for an absent colleague on the day of the attack.

Students arrived at the funeral to say their final goodbyes, as the tight-knit school community struggles to come to terms with the loss and find words for its grief.

"We are devastated. We never imagined it would be her. I don't know what to say. I just hope that she goes to the best possible place in the afterlife," said Supang Nakphalang, a family member of the deceased teacher.

Also among the mourners was 14-year-old student Teerawat Wanlee, who came chillingly close to becoming another victim. When the gunfire erupted, fragments from the bullets struck his forehead.

"We heard loud bangs. A teacher went outside to check with a friend, and they were shot. My friend was shot too. After that, the shooter turned around and started shooting at the door, and another teacher was shot," Teerawat recalled.

As Buddhist monks chanted solemn prayers, the gathered crowd from school community sat in silent mourning. The silence was heavy with unanswerable questions: Why did the attack happen? Why did it target a school? How could such violence unfold in a place dedicated to learning? The tragedy has left scars that extend far beyond physical casualties, leaving an entire community grapple with an act once believed unthinkable.
