Dozens of rescuers and onlookers burst into applause and cheers in Pereira in western Colombia on Tuesday night as a young child was pulled from the rubble of a collapsed building following the country's 7.5-magnitude earthquake.

Footage from the scene showed rescuers carefully clearing debris as they worked to reach the trapped child. Onlookers who had gathered at the site held up their phones with flashlights on, casting additional light onto the rescue effort.

When the child was finally brought out, the crowd erupted in applause and cheers, a moment of relief and joy amid the wreckage.

The dramatic rescue came after the strong quake struck the country on Monday, causing widespread damage across multiple regions. Pereira, a city in Colombia's coffee-growing region, was among the cities ravaged by the earthquake.

The death toll from the earthquake in western Colombia has risen to 188, with 1,677 others injured, the Colombian Association of Capital Cities, or Asocapitales, said Tuesday.

Of the total, the latest tally included 95 deaths and 997 injuries reported in the city of Cali, while Pereira reported 79 deaths and 278 injuries.

Rescue operations are continuing in affected areas as the government had declared a state of national disaster to respond to the impact of the earthquake.

En medio de la tragedia por el terremoto en Colombia, se vivieron momentos muy emotivos entre rescatistas y voluntarios en la ciudad de Pereira al lograr rescatar a un niño de entre los escombros.

La multitud estalló en aplausos y vítores la noche del martes, cuando un niño fue sacado de entre los pedazos de hormigón tras permanecer atrapado varias horas después del seísmo.

En las imágenes se ve a los rescatistas retirando cuidadosamente los pedazos de hormigón mientras trabajaban para llegar hasta el niño atrapado. Una multitud que se había congregado en el lugar alzaba las linternas de sus teléfonos, ayudando a iluminar aún más el sitio de rescate.

Cuando finalmente sacaron al niño, las personas estallaron en aplausos y vítores, en un momento de alivio y algarabía en medio de la devastación.

Un terremoto de magnitud 7,4 sacudió el lunes el oeste del país, causando daños generalizados en varias regiones, siendo Pereira, una de las ciudades más afectadas.

El seísmo dejó al menos 181 personas fallecidas y 2.595 heridas a nivel nacional, informó el martes, el presidente de Colombia, Abelardo de la Espriella. La Asociación Colombiana de Ciudades Capitales (Asocapitales) también reportó en su portal web el martes con corte a las 16:00, que las cifras de muertos llegó a 188 y la de heridos a 1.677 en las ciudades capitales.

Asocapitales detalló en este informe que en la ciudad de Cali se han reportado 95 decesos y 997 heridos, mientras que en Pereira, 79 personas fallecidas y 278 heridas.

Las operaciones de rescate continúan. El Gobierno declaró el martes el estado de desastre nacional para responder al impacto del terremoto.
