Japan has released about 173,000 tons of nuclear-contaminated wastewater from the crippled Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant into the sea in 22 rounds of ocean discharge over the past three years.

Monday marks three years since wastewater was first released from the plant. When the releases began, the tanks held 1.33 million tons of wastewater, and that amount has only been reduced by 100,000 tons, down 7 percent.

The plant's operator Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings (TEPCO) plans to increase the discharge of nuclear-contaminated water starting from this fiscal year, with the goal of completing decommissioning of the plant by 2051, though it remains unclear whether the timeline could be achieved.

The latest release, also the fourth round in fiscal 2026, began on July 30 and was completed on Monday afternoon.

The newly discharged 7,888-ton wastewater contained approximately 1.3 trillion becquerels of radioactive tritium, TEPCO said.

In the fiscal year that began in April, TEPCO plans to release about 62,400 tonnes of wastewater in eight rounds.

Struck by a 9-magnitude earthquake and the ensuing tsunami on March 11, 2011, the Fukushima nuclear plant suffered core meltdowns that released radiation, resulting in a level-7 nuclear accident, the highest on the International Nuclear and Radiological Event Scale.

Despite concerns and opposition from the international community, Japan unilaterally launched the discharge of nuclear-contaminated water from the Fukushima Daiichi plant into the ocean on August 24, 2023.

　日本の福島第一原子力発電所にたまる原発汚染水の海洋放出が始まってから、24日で3年となった。これまでに22回の放出が行われ、累計で約17万3000トンが海に流された。

　海洋放出開始当初、施設内の貯蔵タンクには133万トンの汚染水が貯められていたが、3年経った現在もその量はわずか7%しか減っていない。

　東京電力は、2051年までに廃炉完了を目標に、26年度から放出回数を年8回と1回増やした。ただ、達成できるかどうかは依然として不透明だ。

　東電は26年度に計6万2400トンを放出する計画だ。先月30日から今月24にかけて行なわれた今年度の4回目の放出では、放出量は7888トンでトリチウム総量は約1.3兆ベクレルだった。

　2011年3月11日、マグニチュード9.0の地震とそれに伴う津波により、福島第一原子力発電所が炉心溶融を起こし、国際原子力事象評価尺度で最悪のレベル7の事故が発生した。

　日本政府と東電は2023年8月24日、国際社会の強い懸念や反対を押し切って、福島第一原発から汚染水の海洋放出を開始、今も強行し続けている。
