A growing chorus of U.S. political and business leaders is speaking out against the Trump administration's tariff policies, after Canada announced it would suspend bilateral trade negotiations and impose retaliatory tariffs of equal measure, escalating a trade dispute that critics say will further hurt American families and businesses.

The United States and Canada traded blame after bilateral trade negotiations collapsed on Friday, leading the U.S. government to impose 50-percent tariffs on 20 billion U.S. dollars' worth of Canadian goods on Saturday and Canada setting Sept 8 as the start of its retaliatory duties. The tit-for-tat tariffs are expected to raise prices for people in both countries.

U.S. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer on Sunday slammed the administration's move in a post on social media platform X, accusing President Donald Trump of adding "another bill" to working-class families already crushed by the "skyrocketing costs" caused by his policies.

"Trump's chaotic trade wars are bleeding the American people dry, and now he's coming back for more," Schumer said in his post, urging an immediate end to the tariff friction.

Several state leaders have also criticized the administration's tariff move, particularly those from regions heavily dependent on cross-border commerce between the two countries.

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer on Sunday pointed to the "unique shock" the ongoing tariff dispute is delivering to her state, a major hub for the U.S. auto industry.

"Michiganders are uniquely impacted by DC Republicans' ongoing, chaotic tariff wars with Canada. These tariffs act as a tax hike on Michigan families and businesses by raising prices at the grocery store and the gas pump," Whitmer said on Facebook.

Whitmer added that the uncertainty could also result in job losses in the auto industry. "Companies - especially our auto manufacturers - face the difficult decision of laying off workers or passing costs onto their customers," she warned.

California Governor Gavin Newsom also weighed in, questioning on social media the logic behind the administration's move to target one of U.S. closest allies and most important trading partners.

Meanwhile, the business community has raised the alarm. In a recent statement, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce called on both sides to return to the negotiating table and reach a resolution, cautioning that without a breakthrough, the United States and Canada risk being trapped in "an escalating tariff cycle that will only add to the burden on American households."

Joshua Bolten, CEO of the Business Roundtable, which represents leaders of major U.S. companies, echoed those concerns, according to media report on Sunday.

According to the report, Bolten warned that the trade friction with Canada would drive up costs for U.S. companies and consumers alike, while disrupting essential supply chains across critical industries. He urged both governments to resume negotiations.
