A high-altitude glacier collapse on the Nepalese side triggered the massive mudslide that caused casualties and left many missing at the Gyirong Port in southwest China's Xizang, Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian said Friday, citing joint expert assessments from both countries.

The mudslide struck Gyirong Port in Gyirong County on Wednesday morning. As of 15:00 on Friday, five people had been killed, and 558 others remained missing.

"Experts and official institutions of China and Nepal have made preliminary assessment on the cause of the disaster. According to their analysis, the disaster has been triggered by a collapse of a high-altitude glacier in Nepal. For more details, please refer to the information released by competent authorities," Lin said.

When asked about the victims' nationalities, Lin said the information was still being verified.

"Relevant information is under further verification. We have informed relevant countries' embassies in China and will stay in contact with them," Lin said.
