The Simon Bolivar International Airport in Maiquetia, the main air terminal serving the Venezuelan capital city of Caracas, partially resumed operations on Tuesday, two months after major earthquakes struck the country.

Modular structures, tents and industrial sheds were installed in the terminal's parking area to receive passengers for domestic and international departures and arrivals, while repair work continues on airport facilities that were affected by the earthquake.

The installed structures have the capacity to handle up to 500 passengers simultaneously for departures and 760 passengers for arrivals, as the gradual recovery of airport operations progresses.

On the first day of operations, there were four international arrivals and departures and seven domestic arrivals and departures, representing 25 percent of the airport's pre-earthquake capacity.

Venezuelan citizens praised the speed of the construction work and the services provided in the designated areas.

"Honestly, it's great that they've made such quick progress after everything that happened with the earthquake," said Jacky Rondon, a Venezuelan citizen.

"It's been very serious, both the loss of life and the material damage. Every natural disaster hits us hard. We've all lost something. We've all lost a friend, a family member, someone we knew, everyone has lost something. But we still have hope, and we know this will be resolved soon," said Virginia Campos, another Venezuelan citizen.

Venezuela's Minister of Transport, Francisco Garces, said that the airport terminal has all the characteristics of a national and international airport, including service areas and the necessary security measures. He added that all aeronautical services, such as radio navigation aids and radar systems, are fully operational and available to users.

Regarding post-disaster reconstruction, Garces explained that the damage to the airport is mild to moderate, allowing for its structural recovery.

However, repair work continues on the airport runway, which was severely affected because the geological fault runs directly through that area.

Following the earthquakes, flights were redirected to smaller airports located three to five hours from the capital.

El Aeropuerto Internacional Simón Bolívar de Maiquetía, la principal terminal aérea que sirve a Caracas, capital de Venezuela, reinició el martes parcialmente sus operaciones, dos meses después de que los terremotos de gran magnitud sacudieran al país.

Se instalaron estructuras modulares (carpas y naves industriales) en el área del estacionamiento de la terminal para las salidas y llegadas de vuelos nacionales e internacionales, mientras continúan las obras de reparación de las instalaciones aeroportuarias que quedaron afectadas por el doblete sísmico.

Las estructuras instaladas tienen capacidad para movilizar hasta 1.260 pasajeros de forma simultánea, a medida que la recuperación gradual de la operatividad del aeropuerto avanza.

En el día inaugural se registraron cuatro llegadas y salidas internacionales y siete llegadas y salidas nacionales, que representan el 25 por ciento de la capacidad del aeropuerto previa al terremoto.

Los ciudadanos venezolanos valoraron la rapidez de las obras y los servicios de los espacios habilitados.

"Para que hayan adelantado así tan rápido después de lo que pasó con el terremoto es muy bueno, la verdad", expresó Jacky Rondón, una ciudadana venezolana.

El ministro de Transporte de Venezuela, Francisco Garcés, detalló que la terminal aérea cuenta con todas las características propias de un aeropuerto nacional e internacional, así como con todas las áreas de atención y las medidas de seguridad correspondientes. Añadió que todos los servicios aeronáuticos, incluidas las radioayudas y los radares, se encuentran plenamente operativos.

Respecto a los trabajos de reconstrucción, Garcés explicó que los daños que sufrió el aeropuerto son leves y moderados, lo cual permite su recuperación desde el punto de vista estructural.

Asimismo, continúan los trabajos de reparación en la pista del aeropuerto, la cual resultó gravemente afectada debido a que la falla geológica atraviesa precisamente esa área.

Tras los sismos, los vuelos eran desviados a aeropuertos de menor envergadura a tres y cinco horas de la capital.
