"I did a little bit of research on what China was like before I came here, but I did still hold this impression that it was very old-fashioned and had a lot of the old forms of life. But since coming to China, it's a lot more cities and technology, a lot of luxury. It's really new. I expected maybe that some people would know English and some people would know what's happening outside of China. From what I can see, most of the people I speak to have a working knowledge of English and have a pretty good understanding of what life is like outside of China. "I think what sticks out to me the most is probably the efficiency. It's not one specific piece of technology. It's the way that all of the systems work together in a really fast-paced, very convenient way. My Alipay has my QR code, and then from the Alipay (app), I can also order my high-speed train tickets. I can book my hotel. I can order my cell service for overseas and all of that is really convenient because it also has my card information and it has my passport information. So I can do all of that in 10 minutes, very quickly, very easily, because the information passes through all of the systems. They're not independent, they work together."

A young American professional working in China has shared her impressions of what life is like in the country, expressing hope that China and the United States can develop stronger ties and work together to build a better world.

Kris, a social media manager working in Shenzhen, the tech hub in south China's Guangdong Province, said she came to China with an open mind, hoping to learn about a different country and culture.

"I think part of the reason why I came to China was not only the job opportunity, (to) develop my skills, but also to see what another kind of lifestyle was like. I knew a little bit about China before I came here, and I feel like it's really changing a lot. It's really advancing," she said in an interview with China Global Television Network (CGTN).

Before traveling to China, Kris had imagined a traditional country, but after arriving, she discovered modern cities, advanced technology and a highly convenient way of life.

"I did a little bit of research on what China was like before I came here, but I did still hold this impression that it was very old-fashioned and had a lot of the old forms of life. What struck her most was the efficiency of interconnected systems, with virtually all of her spending needs available through a single super-app.

During her time in Shenzhen, she has also felt the warmth of ordinary people who seem to seek genuine connection with her.

"I think overall, my experience in China has been very kind, very warm. But if I want to pick out one specific thing, I think it would be that my apartment manager is in the process of learning English. I speak enough Chinese to get by, but I think it's very heartwarming and very sweet that my apartment manager is making the effort to learn the language so she can speak with me directly," she said.

These unexpected experiences have reshaped the way Kris views U.S.-China relations. Beginning at the people-to-people level, she believes a strong foundation can be built for a productive partnership.

"I think among common people, we see that China and America have a very strong working relationship. I think young people specifically can see that the China that exists now is not the China that we were told about from our parents. I think in order to move forward in stronger collaborations, it's important for us to bridge those gaps through social media and things like that and see what the real China is like, and Chinese people can see what America is like, and we can bridge those kind of cultural gaps by interacting with each other and building stronger understanding and stronger business together," said the young American.
