A Chinese envoy warned against politicization or instrumentalization of artificial intelligence (AI) at a U.N. Security Council meeting on Wednesday.

Speaking at a U.N. Security Council High-Level meeting on AI and international security in New York, Fu Cong, China's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, noted that countries should strengthen solidarity and cooperation, prioritize both development and security, and steer AI toward positive, beneficial uses that serve humanity and contribute to world peace, stability, development and prosperity.

"Every country has the right to independently choose AI technologies, products and services based on its actual needs and the laws of the market. The practice of cobbling together exclusive small circles in the tech field and forcing countries to pick sides essentially politicizes and instrumentalizes science and technology issues, serving the attempt of a handful of major powers to monopolize technological advantages and pursue digital hegemony," Fu said.
