Saudi air defenses on Wednesday intercepted a Houthi ballistic missile targeting the capital Riyadh, while Houthi forces claimed to have shot down a Saudi reconnaissance drone over northern Yemen.
Coalition spokesperson Turki Al-Malki confirmed on social media platform X that the incoming missile was destroyed north of Riyadh. He added that surveillance systems over Sanaa are actively tracking the launch platform to neutralize the threat at its source, according to the official Saudi Press Agency (SPA).
Meanwhile, Houthi military spokesman Yahya Sarea said on Telegram that the group shot down a Saudi CH-4 reconnaissance drone operating over Yemen's northern province of Al-Jawf.
The Houthis said they launched a new wave of ballistic missile and drone attacks targeting airports and military installations across Saudi Arabia.
The cross-border attacks came amid intensified fighting between the Houthis and Saudi-backed Yemeni government forces, particularly near the strategic Bab al-Mandab Strait. Saudi forces have stepped up air operations, while the Houthis have increased missile and drone strikes inside Saudi Arabia.
Yemen's conflict began in late 2014, when the Houthis seized Sanaa and much of northern Yemen. A Saudi-led coalition intervened in 2015 in support of the internationally recognized government, now based in Aden.
