An attack targeting King Khalid International Airport in the Saudi capital Riyadh on Saturday left multiple injuries and prompted a temporary suspension of airport operations, Saudi Arabia's General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA) said.
An explosion was heard at Terminal 3 of the airport in the afternoon, and smoke was briefly seen rising near the terminal.
GACA said in a statement that the attack occurred amid continued attacks targeting civil aviation facilities in the kingdom, adding that the full extent of the casualties from the latest attack was still being assessed.
Airport operations had been temporarily suspended pending damage assessments and safety checks, the authority said.
GACA said it was coordinating with relevant authorities on the matter and that further updates would be issued later.
Saturday's attack followed two strikes on the airport on Thursday that killed three Saudi citizens and injured several others, according to an earlier statement released by GACA on Friday.
As of Saturday afternoon, data from Flightradar24, a global flight tracking service, showed no flights taking off or landing at the airport. Some flights bound for Riyadh had diverted to other airports or turned back.
The airport issued a travel alert on Saturday afternoon, advising passengers to confirm their flight status before heading to the airport.
