Tensions between the United States and Iran escalated sharply across the Strait of Hormuz following fresh maritime incidents and conflicting assertions over control of the strategic shipping route.
Iran's Islamic Revolution Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy Commander Ali Azmaei said late Tuesday that U.S. assertions that the Strait of Hormuz remains fully open were "completely contrary to reality."
Azmaei said that the IRGC navy is monitoring the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz "round the clock," warning that any vessel attempting to pass must obtain authorization or face a decisive response. His comments came after U.S. President Donald Trump claimed in an interview on Saturday that the United States had full control over the waterway.
The IRGC navy said in a statement on Wednesday that a cargo vessel carrying 2,500 containers sank after striking a mine and catching fire while attempting to navigate an "unauthorized and high-risk" route in the Strait of Hormuz. The IRGC warned nearby vessels and fishermen to exercise extreme caution to avoid collisions with floating containers.
Iran tightened its grip on the Strait of Hormuz on Feb. 28, barring safe passage of vessels belonging to or affiliated with Israel and the United States following their joint strikes on Iranian territory.
Also on Wednesday, the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) announced that U.S. forces destroyed an Iran-linked dhow in the nearby Gulf of Oman on October 6. CENTCOM said the vessel was actively monitoring and targeting U.S. Navy ships, adding that its crew was safely evacuated prior to the strike and that repatriation efforts are currently underway.
The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) said in a statement late on Wednesday that two Singapore-registered container ships were hit by unknown projectiles while transiting the Strait of Hormuz on Tuesday and Wednesday respectively, one of which caught fire and sank.
