The New China-DPRK Yalu River Bridge opened to cargo traffic on Thursday, adding a four-lane crossing to expand freight capacity and support trade between the two countries.

China and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) held a joint ceremony to mark the opening. Flower-decorated trucks were among the first vehicles to cross the bridge, which links Dandong in northeast China's Liaoning Province with Sinuiju in the DPRK.

The 28.5-meter-wide road bridge has four lanes for two-way traffic. Construction began in December 2010 and was completed in October 2014.

The new crossing will operate alongside the China-DPRK Friendship Bridge, a combined road-and-rail bridge that allows road traffic in only one direction at a time and can accommodate trucks weighing less than 20 metric tons.

Dandong is home to China's largest border trade port with the DPRK. Bilateral trade reached 2.735 billion U.S. dollars in 2025, according to Chinese official data. China's Foreign Ministry said the new bridge will further improve connectivity and facilitate trade and people-to-people exchanges.
