The spirit of the Long March remains central to China's national character and modern development, according to Tatjana Soldat, director of the Serbian Cultural Center in Beijing.

In a recent interview, Soldat discussed the enduring legacy of the historic episode, its reflection in China's international cooperation, and the lessons it holds for younger generations.

The Long March (1934–1936) was a major military maneuver by the Red Army, in which troops traversed over 12,500 kilometers of harsh terrain to establish a new base, a event that became a defining symbol of endurance in modern Chinese history.

"Today, the Long March spirit has become part of the Chinese people's blood, part of their character - to never give up, no matter the enemy or the difficulty. I believe this spirit helped fulfill China's missions in wartime. In peacetime, it drives people to pursue development, learning and progress," she said.

The same ethos can be observed in China's global engagement, according to the official.

"I believe China has also embodied this spirit on the international stage. For instance, the Belt and Road cooperation and the China-Central and Eastern European Countries cooperation mechanism are both examples of this. Serbia and China cooperate in various fields, and I am also aware that China has similar cooperative projects with other countries," she said.

In her view, firsthand exposure to Long‑March‑related history is vital for youth to grasp the weight of the past and carry forward relevant values.

"Young people should travel this route and learn about the history of the Long March. Only in this way can they gain a deeper understanding of the heroic stories from the past. It will also motivate them to study harder, strive for progress and contribute to their country's development. Young people must always remember that peace does not come easily, honor the heroes, never forget the past and look ahead to the future," said Soldat.
