Russia and Ukraine have confirmed a temporary ceasefire in the Russian-controlled southern Ukrainian city of Oleshky starting Oct. 29 to allow humanitarian aid deliveries and civilian evacuations.
Valery Gerasimov, chief of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces and first deputy defense minister, said on Friday that Russian forces will cease fire and introduce a "silence regime" in the Kherson region from 04:00 Moscow time (0100 GMT) on Oct. 27 to facilitate a humanitarian operation.
The White House said earlier Friday that the United States had secured an agreement on a local ceasefire in Oleshky, which takes effect on Oct. 29.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said U.S. First Lady Melania Trump played a coordinating role in organizing the humanitarian mission in Oleshky.
The General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces issued a statement on Friday stating that the Ukrainian military will implement the decisions by the Ukrainian Supreme Commander-in-Chief to carry out the humanitarian operation in Oleshky. Relevant orders will be issued to the troops through the prescribed procedures.
According to the White House, since the outbreak of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, Oleshky has been on the front line, and most residents have left, but 1,700 to 2,000 people remain, mostly elderly people unable to leave, plus about 50 children.
Oleshky is located on the left bank of the Dnieper River, opposite the Ukrainian-controlled city of Kherson. The town has been facing a severe humanitarian situation, with residents reporting worsening shortages of food and other essential supplies amid continuous fighting.
