"The Taiwan question is purely part of China's internal affairs which brooks no foreign interference. The DPP authorities are squandering the hard-earned money of Taiwan resident in a vain attempt to seek separatism through military buildup and by soliciting foreign support. They are miscalculating and heading down a dead end."

A Chinese mainland spokesman on Wednesday condemned the Democratic Progressive Party authorities in Taiwan for lavishly spending public funds to invite U.S. personnel to observe Taiwan's military drills, emphasizing that the Taiwan question does not tolerate external interference.

At a regular news conference in Beijing, Chen Binhua, spokesman for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, accused the DPP authorities of wasting the hard-earned money of Taiwan residents in a futile attempt to seek separatism through force and external support.

"The Taiwan question is purely part of China's internal affairs which brooks no foreign interference. The DPP authorities are squandering the hard-earned money of Taiwan resident in a vain attempt to seek separatism through military buildup and by soliciting foreign support. They are miscalculating and heading down a dead end," Chen said.

Taiwan's "defense" department recently acknowledged earmarking approximately 82.44 million new Taiwan dollars (2.54 million U.S. dollars) for this year and next to invite U.S. personnel, including a retired U.S. general, to observe the so-called Han Kuang exercises, the island's largest annual military drills.

The DPP authorities' decision has also drawn criticism on the island, with public opinion accusing them of "pleading poverty to the people while being generous to outsiders".
