Storyline

Typhoon Nepartak had caused four deaths and 12 missing as of 20:30 Sunday in Minqing County of southeast China's Fujian Province, according to figures released by the county flood prevention and relief authority on Monday evening.

The relief work is still underway.

Nepartak, the first typhoon of the year, brought to Minqing a heavy rain that lasted from 08:00 to 11:00 on Saturday, with the precipitation in 16 townships of the county exceeding 200 millimeters within three hours, raising the water level of a local river for seven to eight meters.

The floodwater in the urban area of the county had almost receded by Sunday, but the clean-up work is still heavy as the silt is as deep as 20 to 30 centimeters at some locations.

Local electricity department has deployed 500 electricians to repair the damaged power supply facilities.

The power and water supplies and telecommunication basically resumed on Sunday in the county seat except for some worst hit areas like Bandong Township.

"The silt piled up in my house for more than 30 centimeters. I started clearing yesterday and have not finished yet," said Liu, a resident in Bandong.

Local authorities and troops have joined the residents in the relief work, and a lot of relief materials have been delivered to Bandong.

The destructive power of Nepartak was recorded by a surveillance camera at a road junction in Minqing. The video shows that the water level on the street rose by five meters within two hours inundating almost all the streetfront shops.

Typhoon Nepartak made landfall on Saturday afternoon in Fujian, bringing with it gales and downpours.
