Chinese President Xi Jinping underlined the importance of ecological conservation, saying that ecology is resource, wealth and treasure, during his inspection tour of northwest China's Qinghai Province from Monday through Wednesday.
Xi, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, on Tuesday inspected the achievements made in comprehensively harnessing environmental problems and protecting biodiversity at the Qinghai Lake.
He was also briefed on the environmental protection efforts in the Qilian Mountains and the Qinghai Lake.
Sitting on the northwestern Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, the Qinghai Lake is known as the country's largest inland saltwater lake. It is also a crucial body of water to maintain ecological security. People often refer to it as the plateau's "gene pool."
On May 27, 2017, President Xi had already stressed that Chinese people should protect ecology and the environment like they protect their eyes; and protect resources like they protect their lives.
Five years on, great changes have been taking place little by little.
The Bird Island, once a hot-spot for tourists, has been closed for ecological restoration.
"There used to be a road, but now is swallowed by water. Things have returned to what they were in the 1970s," said Ge Yuxiu, a photographer.
Now the number of bird species at the Qinghai Lake maintains at a stable level, with an annual count of different species of birds totaling 376,000.
The Qinghai Lake is home to a kind of carp fish, which is also know as the Gymnocypris przewalskii. To help the fish breeding, local conservationists transformed a water gate to a 12-stair platform for the fish to lay eggs.
"The stair is made for the fish to lay eggs. With longer way of stairs, the fish lay more eggs. So we renovated it into a 12-stair platform," said Tang Yulin, a local conservationist.
By 2020, the standing stock of Gymnocypris przewalskii had reached 100,400 tons.
The number of Przewalski's gazelles near Qinghai Lake stays stably around 2,700, up from over 300 in 1994, data from the lake's administration showed.
"To live in harmony with wild animals, you need to respect them," said Wu Yonglin, who has devoted 19 years to protecting Przewalski's gazelles.
Now, 90 percent of the province's territory has been designated as areas where development activities are restricted or prohibited. National parks, nature reserves and all kind of parks have been built to preserve the local environment and ecology.
"We hope our children will have flowers, grass and little animal as company when they grow up. Then they will take care of yaks and animals," said a local resident.
"We should do a good job in promoting ecological progress, protecting ecological resources and building national parks in Qinghai. This is our treasure, resource and fortune," said Xi.
