China's transportation networks are operating at peak capacity on Tuesday, the final day of the five-day May Day holiday, as millions of travelers hit the rails, roads and waterways, capping days of festivities with a massive return journey.

The national railway system is expected to handle 23 million passenger trips on Tuesday. To manage the influx, railway authorities have added 2,225 extra passenger trains, strategically deploying additional capacity on popular routes and during peak travel hours.

Regional operators have also ramped up services significantly. The China Railway Shanghai Group plans to put 469 additional trains into service on Tuesday, while the Chengdu Group will add 459 trains. The Zhengzhou Group has scheduled 38 additional overnight high-speed trains to key destinations including Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou, so as to ensure that travelers have ample options for their return trips.

With respect to highways, the national highway network is projected to record approximately 61 million vehicle trips on Tuesday. The peak traffic window is expected between 16:00 and 18:00, with congestion and slow-moving traffic likely around major city entry and exit points, as well as airport expressways in cities like Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Chengdu.

The toll-free policy for passenger vehicles with seven seats or fewer will remain in effect until 24:00 on Tuesday. The exemption is calculated based on the time a vehicle exits the toll lane on expressways.

By water, an estimated 1.035 million passenger trips will be made across the country on Tuesday, marking a 1.4 percent increase compared to the same period last year.
