The U.S. consumer price index (CPI) for April increased by 3.8 percent year on year, up from 3.3 percent in March as energy prices hovered at high levels, data released by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics showed on Tuesday.

This marks the highest level of U.S. headline inflation since May 2024, underlining challenges facing policymakers in the country. Observers have raised concerns as headline inflation in April surpassed the 3.6-percent growth in national average hourly earnings.

Heather Long, chief economist at Navy Federal Credit Union, said for the first time in three years, "inflation is eating up all wage gains."

Meanwhile, the index for energy increased 3.8 percent month on month in April, accounting for over 40 percent of the monthly all items increase. In particular, gasoline prices surged 28.4 percent year on year amid oil supply shocks. The index for food increased 0.5 percent month over month in April in comparison to zero growth in the previous month.

Notably, signs emerged that core inflation has also picked up. In April, both shelter and apparel prices rose 0.6 percent from the previous month, while airline fares increased 20.7 percent year on year.

Core CPI, which excludes volatile food and energy components to measure underlying inflation, rose 0.4 percent month on month in April, up from 2.6 percent in March. The April figure was up 2.8 percent year on year.

Sticky inflation is expected to continue to weigh on U.S. households, especially low-income groups.

L'indice des prix à la consommation (IPC) américain a augmenté de 3,8 % en avril sur un an, contre 3,3 % en mars, en raison du maintien de prix élevés de l'énergie, selon les données publiées mardi par le Bureau de la statistique du travail des États-Unis.

L'accélération de l'inflation globale aux États-Unis en avril marque son plus haut niveau depuis mai 2023, soulignant les défis auxquels sont confrontés les décideurs politiques américains.

L'indice de l'énergie a progressé de 3,8 % en avril par rapport au mois précédent, représentant plus de 40 % de la hausse mensuelle de l'ensemble des prix. En particulier, les prix de l'essence ont bondi de 28,4 % sur un an. L'indice des prix alimentaires a augmenté de 0,5 % en avril par rapport au mois précédent, après une croissance nulle.

On observe notamment des signes d'une propagation de l'inflation sous-jacente, les prix du logement et de l'habillement ayant augmenté de 0,6 % en avril par rapport au mois précédent. Les tarifs aériens ont quant à eux progressé de 20,7 % en avril sur un an.

L'IPC de base, qui exclut les composantes volatiles que sont l'alimentation et l'énergie pour mesurer l'inflation sous-jacente, a progressé de 0,4 % en avril par rapport au mois précédent. Sur un an, l'IPC de base a augmenté de 2,8 %, contre 2,6 % en mars.

L'inflation globale d'avril, qui a dépassé la croissance de 3,6 % du salaire horaire moyen national, a suscité l'attention et des inquiétudes.

Heather Long, économiste en chef de Navy Federal Credit Union, a déclaré que, pour la première fois en trois ans, "l'inflation absorbe toute la progression des salaires".

Cette inflation persistante devrait continuer de peser sur les ménages américains, en particulier les plus modestes.

El índice de precios al consumidor (IPC) de Estados Unidos aumentó un 3,8 por ciento interanual en abril, frente al 3,3 por ciento de marzo, debido a los altos precios de la energía, según datos publicados el martes por la Oficina de Estadísticas Laborales de Estados Unidos.

La inflación en abril llega a su nivel más alto desde junio de 2023, lo que pone de relieve los desafíos que enfrentan los responsables políticos del país. Los observadores han expresado su preocupación, ya que la inflación en abril superó el crecimiento del 3,6 por ciento en el salario promedio por hora en el país.

Heather Long, economista jefe de Navy Federal Credit Union, afirmó que, por primera vez en tres años, "la inflación está absorbiendo todas las ganancias salariales".

Por su parte, el índice de la energía aumentó un 3,8 por ciento intermensual en abril, lo que representó más del 40 por ciento del incremento mensual del índice general. En concreto, los precios de la gasolina se dispararon un 28,4 por ciento interanual en medio de las crisis de suministro de petróleo. El índice de precios de los alimentos subió un 0,5 por ciento intermensual en abril, tras haberse mantenido sin cambios en marzo.

Cabe destacar que se observaron indicios de que la inflación subyacente también se ha acelerado. En abril, tanto los precios de la vivienda como los de la ropa subieron un 0,6 por ciento con respecto al mes anterior, mientras que las tarifas aéreas se dispararon un 20,7 por ciento en términos interanuales.

El IPC subyacente, que excluye los precios volátiles de los alimentos y la energía, registró un aumento mensual del 0,4 por ciento en abril, frente al 2,6 por ciento de marzo. La cifra de abril representó un aumento interanual del 2,8 por ciento.

Se prevé que la persistente inflación siga afectando a los hogares estadounidenses, especialmente a los de bajos ingresos.

Der Verbraucherpreisindex (VPI) in den USA ist im April im Jahresvergleich um 3,8 Prozent gestiegen, nach 3,3 Prozent im März. Grund dafür waren vor allem die anhaltend hohen Energiepreise, wie das US-Arbeitsministerium am Dienstag mitteilte. Die Inflation erreichte damit ihren höchsten Stand seit Mai 2023.

Beobachter zeigten sich besorgt, da die Inflationsrate im April mit 3,8 Prozent das Wachstum der durchschnittlichen Stundenlöhne im Land von 3,6 Prozent übertraf.

Die Energiepreise stiegen im April gegenüber dem Vormonat um 3,8 Prozent und machten damit über 40 Prozent des monatlichen Preisauftriebs aus. Insbesondere die Benzinpreise legten angesichts von Öllieferstörungen im Jahresvergleich um 28,4 Prozent zu. Die Lebensmittelpreise stiegen im April im Monatsvergleich um 0,5 Prozent, nach null Prozent im Vormonat.

Zudem mehren sich die Anzeichen einer hartnäckigen Kerninflation. Im April verteuerten sich sowohl die Wohnkosten als auch die Bekleidungspreise jeweils um 0,6 Prozent zum Vormonat, während die Flugtarife im Jahresvergleich um 20,7 Prozent zulegten.

Der Kern-VPI, der Lebensmittel und Energie ausschließt, stieg im April im Vergleich zum Vormonat um 0,4 Prozent, nach 2,6 Prozent im März. Im Jahresvergleich lag der Anstieg bei 2,8 Prozent.

Die hartnäckige Inflation dürfte die amerikanischen Haushalte – vor allem einkommensschwache – weiter belasten.
