Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Sunday called for deeper and broader collaboration in emerging industries with China at a faster pace while attending an investment conference in east China's Hangzhou, a city known for its concentration of high-tech industries.
Sharif landed in Hangzhou one day earlier to begin his four-day official visit to China. He chose the eastern Chinese tech hub as his first stop, where he could experience China's innovation-driven vitality first-hand.
On his second day in Hangzhou, Sharif arrived early at the Pakistan-China Business-to-Business (B2B) Investment Conference, which brought together more than 500 companies from both countries with many of them having traveled especially from Pakistan, underscoring growing interest in emerging-sector partnerships.
At the event, the prime minister congratulated the two nations on the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between them, and said that extensive economic and trade cooperation in the past period of time has begun to bear fruit.
"Our friendship goes back to the days of the Silk Road when goods were transported through mules and camels and donkeys. And today, here we are. Everything is now being operated through digitization. And China excels in this field more than any other country in the world. I think we need to move with speed and achieve milestones," he said.
In his address, Sharif said he hoped that agriculture, information technology and artificial intelligence, special economic zones, and mineral resources could be the priority areas for bilateral cooperation. He also extended an invitation to more Chinese companies to invest and operate in Pakistan.
"[In] Karachi, which is a port city as all of you know, we have come up with a special economic zone and we are going to provide all basic amenities over there so that Chinese investors, Pakistani entrepreneurs together can make investments over there. You will be offered a red carpet treatment and one-window operation in this special economic zone," he said.
Sharif concluded his address by speaking highly of the friendship between the two countries.
"I would like to say we are here to convey you that Pakistan is looking for expertise, experience, investments. And above all, I would like to say our friendship is deeper than the deepest ocean and high than Himalayas. Ever since we have launched our space program, I would now say that our friendship is touching the skies," he said.
Sharif also witnessed the signing of several memorandum of understanding and agreements of cooperation between Pakistani and Chinese companies.
