The Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) Southern Theater Command on Friday released a footage on how the maritime and air forces of the command expelled and drove away a Dutch shipborne helicopter that illegally intruded into the territorial airspace over China's Xisha Islands on Wednesday.
Zhai Shichen, spokesperson for the Chinese People's Liberation Army Southern Theater Command, said on Wednesday that the vessel, Dutch Navy frigate De Ruyter, illegally trespassed into China's Xisha Qundao in the South China Sea and conducted multiple shipborne helicopter operations violating China's territorial airspace.
In response, the PLA Southern Theater Command organized maritime and air forces to take necessary measures in accordance with laws and regulations to expel and drive away the trespassing vessel, according to Zhai.
The footage showed that Chinese Navy ships Hull 631 and Hull 626 expelled and drove away Dutch Navy frigate De Ruyter at a close range, while Hull 553 of the Chinese Navy issued verbal warnings to the Dutch NH-90 helicopter.
In addition, fighter jets armed with PL-10 air-to-air missiles were also dispatched by the Southern Theater Command to take part in the expulsion operation.
At a press conference in Beijing on Thursday, Jiang Bin, spokesman for the Chinese Ministry of Defense, urged the Dutch side to stop its infringement, risky and provocative actions, and strictly restrain frontline sea and air forces to avoid any unexpected incidents at sea or in the air.
