Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said on Friday that no agreement has been finalized with the United States yet, while U.S. President Donald Trump on Friday deferred his "final determination" on a draft deal with Iran.
Baghaei said in a statement that the exchange of messages between the two sides is continuing, but no agreement has been finalized. It remains to be seen whether the United States will genuinely honor its commitments or merely put on an empty show, said the statement.
The statement held that if the U.S. truly intends to fulfill its promises, it must cease illegal actions started several weeks ago. The so-called U.S. naval blockade was unlawful from the start, which has violated ceasefire agreement and undermined the freedom of international navigation.
Regarding the Strait of Hormuz, Baghaei said that the strait lies within the territorial waters of Iran and Oman, and the two countries will establish a mechanism to protect their own interests and security while simultaneously guaranteeing the safety of international shipping.
Citing informed sources, Iran's semi-official Fars news agency reported on Friday that the draft of the potential agreement is in the final stage of being approved by Iran, and no definitive decision has been made yet.
The Fars report clarified that neither Trump's demand for Iran to keep the Strait of Hormuz open toll-free, nor any requirement to eliminate or destroy Iran's nuclear materials appears in the agreement's text.
The most important part of the agreement to which Trump has not pointed is Iran's insistence on the release of 12 billion U.S. dollars of its frozen assets, according to the report. Another condition, the report said, is a comprehensive ceasefire in Lebanon based on the position of Hezbollah.
The report has made clear that only after these issues are resolved will Iran move to the next phase of negotiations, which would address the full lifting of sanctions and the nuclear issue.
Trump on Friday deferred his "final determination" on a draft deal with Iran after meeting with his national security team at the White House Situation Room.
"The Situation Room meeting has concluded and lasted approximately two hours. President Trump will only make a deal that is good for America and satisfies his redlines. Iran can never possess a nuclear weapon," a White House official said in a statement.
It was not immediately clear why Trump did not reach a decision.
Earlier on Friday, Trump outlined conditions for a deal with Iran in a post on Truth Social, claiming he will be meeting his national security team "to make a final determination" on the day.
Among the U.S. key demands are the elimination of Iran's enriched nuclear materials, reopening the Strait of Hormuz without tolls and removing water mines left.
"Iran must agree that they will never have a Nuclear Weapon or Bomb. The Hormuz Strait must be immediately open, no tolls, for unrestricted shipping traffic, in both directions. All water mines (bombs), if any, will be terminated," Trump wrote.
The U.S. naval blockade "will now be lifted", said Trump.
Iran's enriched nuclear materials, the so-called "nuclear dust" which has been buried deep underground due to U.S. bombing in June last year, will be unearthed by the United States in close coordination and conjunction with Iran and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and destroyed, said Trump.
Trump added that until further notice, no funds would be exchanged between the United States and Iran, while saying that the two sides have agreed on issues far less important than those mentioned above.
Iran, the United States, and Israel reached a ceasefire on April 8 after 40 days of fighting triggered by U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iran.
Over the past weeks, the United States and Iran have exchanged several proposed plans outlining conditions for ending the conflict through Pakistani mediation. The two sides are reportedly working to finalize a memorandum of understanding.
