Eleven-year-old Mukhtadi Jalul is among thousands of children in Gaza whose days begin not with school or play, but with the search for basic necessities like water at displaced persons camps.

Water is scarce in Gaza, and securing it is a daily priority for families. For Jalul, the routine follows a devastating loss: more than a year ago, an Israeli air strike killed his father and older brother, ending his once-happy childhood and forcing him to focus on survival.

"More than a year ago, after my father and brother passed away, I felt like I had suddenly grown up. I had to take on the responsibility of caring for my mother, older sister, and younger sister," he said.

"Although Jalul is only 11 years old, we all call him 'the man of the family'," said Muhammad Jalul, the child's uncle.

To supplement his family's income, the young Jalul sells ice smoothies between tents during the day, earning a meager income.

He once dreamed of becoming a doctor or engineer, but his hopes of changing his destiny through knowledge have been all but dashed. In Gaza today, the vast majority of schools have been destroyed in the bombings.

"We were so happy back then, but now all we have left is sand and ruins. We live in tents, and the heat is unbearable. We really wish we could go back to the past, when we could study in peace, live happily and play freely," he said.

يصادف اليوم يوم الطفل العالمي. وبينما يستمتع الأطفال في كثير من أنحاء العالم بأوقاتهم ويحتفلون بهذه المناسبة، لا يزال آلاف الأطفال في غزة يكافحون من أجل البقاء وسط الحرب والنزوح.

ويُعدّ مهتدي جعرور، البالغ من العمر 11 عاماً، واحداً من هؤلاء الأطفال. ففي يوم الطفل هذا، لا يحلم مهتدي بالألعاب أو الهدايا، بل يتمنى فقط أن يعود إلى مقاعد الدراسة، وأن يجتمع مجدداً بأصدقائه، وأن يستعيد طفولته التي فقدها.

في ساعات الصباح الأولى، يستيقظ مهتدي داخل أحد مخيمات النزوح في مدينة غزة. وبعد أن يغسل وجهه سريعاً، يحمل دلاء المياه ويتوجه إلى نقطة توزيع قريبة للوقوف في طابور الحصول على الماء.

وفي غزة، يُعدّ تأمين المياه للاستخدام اليومي واحدة من أهم المهام التي تواجه كل أسرة، وهي أيضاً الطريقة التي يبدأ بها مهتدي يومه.

وقال مهتدي أنه خلال ليلة واحدة فقط، انتقلت أعباء الأسرة إلى كتفيه: "قبل أكثر من عام، بعد وفاة والدي وأخي مهند، شعرت وكأنني كبرت فجأة. كان لا بد أن أتحمل مسؤولية رعاية والدتي وأختي الكبرى وأختي الصغرى."

وأكد محمد جعرور، عم مهتدي: "على الرغم من أن مهتدي عمره لا يتجاوز 11 عامًا فقط، إلا أننا جميعًا نُطلق عليه 'رجل الأسرة'."

فمن أجل المساهمة في إعالة أسرته، يقضي مهتدي جزءاً من يومه في التجول بين الخيام لبيع المثلجات مقابل دخل بسيط. كما يتولى متابعة الكثير من تفاصيل الحياة اليومية داخل الأسرة.

وعندما يجد بعض الوقت للراحة، يتصفح مهتدي الصور القديمة المحفوظة على هاتفه المحمول. ففي إحدى تلك الصور يظهر مرتدياً زيّ التخرج وهو يحمل شهادة تكريم.

وفي ذلك الوقت، كان يحلم بأن يصبح طبيباً أو مهندساً عندما يكبر، وأن يغيّر مصيره بالعلم والمعرفة. أما اليوم، فقد أصبحت تلك الأحلام بعيدة المنال، بعدما دُمّر معظم مدارس غزة أو خرجت عن الخدمة نتيجة القصف المستمر.

وقال مهتدي: "كنا سعداء جدًا في ذلك الوقت، لكن الآن لم يتبقَ لنا سوى الرمال والأنقاض. نعيش في خيام، لا تقينا الحر ولا البرد. نتمنى حقًا أن نعود إلى الماضي، عندما كنا ندرس بسلام، ونعيش بسعادة ونلعب بحرية."

Más allá de los edificios en ruinas de la Franja de Gaza, la guerra destroza familias con una brutalidad implacable, arrebatando a los niños no solo sus hogares, sino también su inocencia, cambiando las risas de los parques infantiles por el silencio sobrecogedor de la pérdida de seres queridos y el miedo constante a lo desconocido.

Uno de ellos es Mujtadi Yalul, de 11 años, quien había tenido una infancia normal y feliz antes de la guerra. Sin embargo, un bombardeo aéreo hace más de un año asestó un duro golpe a su familia. Su padre y su hermano murieron ese día. Desde entonces, Mujtadi, antes despreocupado, asumió responsabilidades de un adulto.

"Hace más de un año, tras el fallecimiento de mi padre y mi hermano, sentí que de repente había madurado. Tuve que asumir la responsabilidad de cuidar de mi madre, mi hermana mayor y mi hermana menor", contó Mujtadi.

Mujtadi se despierta temprano, tras una ducha rápida, lleva su cubo de agua a un punto de recolección cerca del campamento de desplazados en el que viven.

En Gaza, las familias almacenan agua todos los días, siendo una de las actividades más importantes. Esta es una de las responsabilidades de Mujtadi.

"Aunque Mujtadi solo tiene 11 años, todos lo llamamos ’el hombre de la casa", comentó Muhammad Yalul, tío del niño.

Para complementar los ingresos familiares, Mujtadi vende batidos de hielo entre las tiendas de campaña durante el día.

Mujtadi sueña con ser médico o ingeniero, con cambiar su destino a través del conocimiento. Sin embargo, la gran mayoría de escuelas en Gaza han sido destruidas por los bombardeos.
