2. SOUNDBITE (Chinese) Lu Ming, second-level inspector, Department of International Cooperation, China's National Health Commission:
"Regarding the challenges we are facing, the Ebola outbreak itself presents several key difficulties: first, it is hard to access the epidemic areas. Second, it is difficult to detect cases. Then it is a challenge to manage confirmed cases, while there exists risk of further cross-border transmission. And resources for corresponding disease prevention and control are not quite adequate. These five difficulties have given rise to the current problems in Ebola outbreak control in the DRC."

5. SOUNDBITE (Chinese) Jiang Rongmeng, vice president, Beijing Ditan Hospital, Capital Medical University (starting with shot 4):
"As a developing country, China could try to obtain the best epidemic prevention and control results at the lowest cost. The Chinese government has several important experiences in the prevention and control of infectious diseases, such as mass mobilization, public participation in prevention and control, and combination of public prevention with professional expertise. These approaches could mobilize the entire population. The prevention and control of infectious diseases are not solely a matter for experts or the government, it is actually a matter of all people and everyone. This concept should be spread and passed on. Specifically, for Ebola, since it is a disease transmitted through direct contact and often spreads via funerals, local customs must be taken into consideration."

7. SOUNDBITE (Chinese) Yu Wenzhou, deputy director, National Immunization Program Center, Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention:
"With our country providing technical support through dispatching experts to improve Africa's capacity of public health service, we have forged a tripartite cooperation model, featuring Chinese technology, African application, and plus international standards. This has offered a novel path for global health governance, which is the significance of our efforts in the field of public health."

A team of Chinese medical experts departed from Beijing in the early hours of Tuesday for the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) to support local Ebola control efforts.

The Chinese government decided to send the high-level medical expert team after the World Health Organization determined on May 17 that the Ebola outbreak in the DRC constituted a "public health emergency of international concern."

The five-member Chinese squad will step directly into coordination with the DRC health authorities and international agencies to integrate fully into comprehensive Ebola response.

These five difficulties have given rise to the current problems in Ebola outbreak control in the DRC," said Lu Ming, second-level inspector of the Department of International Cooperation under China's National Health Commission.

The current outbreak involves the rare Bundibugyo strain, a formidable adversary as there are no approved treatments or vaccines.

According to an official from the National Health Commission, the team will share epidemic response experience based on local conditions and help enhance the DRC's capacity for Ebola prevention, control and treatment.

Specifically, for Ebola, since it is a disease transmitted through direct contact and often spreads via funerals, local customs must be taken into consideration," said Jiang Rongmeng, vice president of Beijing Ditan Hospital under the Capital Medical University.

"With our country providing technical support through dispatching experts to improve Africa's capacity of public health service, we have forged a tripartite cooperation model, featuring Chinese technology, African application, and plus international standards. This has offered a novel path for global health governance, which is the significance of our efforts in the field of public health," said Yu Wenzhou, deputy director of the National Immunization Program Center of Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

In response to this round of Ebola outbreak, the 24th batch of the Chinese medical team currently in the DRC has activated an emergency response and established a prevention and control system, including conducting training and drills, coordinating supplies, and improving the team's living environment. Team members have remained on the clinical front lines to protect the health of both local people and Chinese nationals in the DRC.

Confirmed Ebola cases in the DRC have reached 343, the country's Health Minister Roger Kamba said Monday. The latest outbreak, declared on May 15, is the 17th in the DRC since the virus was first identified in 1976.
