The 2026 FIFA World Cup officially began on Thursday with an opening ceremony at the Azteca Stadium that celebrated Mexican culture and the tournament's return to the historic venue.

The expanded 2026 tournament is set to be the biggest ever World Cup, featuring a record number of 48 teams and seeing the competition hosted by three nations for the first time, with matches taking place in Mexico, Canada and the United States from June 11 to July 19.

During the opening ceremony, the stadium was packed to capacity, as Colombian superstar Shakira joined forces with a host of other celebrities to deliver a spectacular performance.

Local football fans wore special costumes and headdresses to welcome the tournament to Mexico, where love for the sport runs deep.

"Football is Mexico's culture. We are very honored to host the World Cup. We are also very proud that this stadium has so much history – including the classic match that Maradona played here. We are very happy to watch the 2026 World Cup," said a football fan.

La primera de las tres ceremonias de apertura de la Copa Mundial de la FIFA 2026 se llevó a cabo el jueves en el Estadio Azteca, rebautizado temporalmente por la FIFA como Estadio Ciudad de México para el torneo, con un lleno total.

La segunda y tercera ceremonia de apertura se realizarán el viernes en Estados Unidos y Canadá, también anfitriones de este edición del torneo.

Este Mundial se perfila como el más grande de la historia, con un récord de 48 selecciones participantes. Los partidos se disputarán en los tres países anfitriones desde el 11 de junio hasta el 19 de julio.

En el estadio se vivió una verdadera fiesta durante la ceremonia de apertura, y en especial cuando la superestrella colombiana Shakira interpretó la canción Dai Dai, considerado por muchos el tema del Mundial. Ella se unió a otros artistas famosos para ofrecer un espectáculo impresionante.
