A dragon boat race at Beijing's Yanqi Lake on Sunday brought together university students for cultural and sports exchange.
Called the 2026 "Dragon Soaring Over Yanqi Lake" dragon boat race, the event was hosted by the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences (UCAS), attracting nearly 500 students from over 30 training units. It also invited dragon boat teams from Peking University, Tianjin University, Nankai University, and the University of Science and Technology of China to compete together.
The charm of dragon boat racing has not only inspired Chinese students but also attracted international students to participate enthusiastically.
"Since it's the Dragon Boat Festival next weekend, we thought it [would be] fun to take part in some Chinese culture [activities] and experience something that Chinese [people do], and for us it's always nice to take part in sports competition and see what other Chinese are doing at this time, because this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity," said Moritz Grimm, international student of Sino Danish College, UCAS.
All teams trained hard in their spare time before the race, constantly refining their paddling techniques and improving teamwork. After fierce competition, the College of Resources and Environment won first place in the university's internal competition.
"Everyone prepared for this race with great dedication. We are truly honored to win the championship. This is the result of the hard work of all our team members," said Guo Haoxiang, team leader of the College of Resources and Environment, UCAS.
In the invitational race among universities, Nankai University won both the men's and mixed group championships.
"We overcame difficulties, adapted to the environment, and finally sprinted with full effort. We gave our all in every stroke and won the championship we had dreamed of. We also had in-depth exchanges with sister universities such as the University of Science and Technology of China, University of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Peking University, and Tianjin University. We feel very happy," said Zhang Ziyang, captain of the Nankai University dragon boat team.
The "Dragon Soaring Over Yanqi Lake" dragon boat race is a brand sports event created by UCAS.
Leveraging the natural water advantages of Yanqi Lake, it has been held for three consecutive years since its inception in 2024, becoming a campus grand event that integrates sports competition, cultural heritage, and academic exchange.
"I hope that through dragon boat racing, we can integrate traditional ethnic sports with traditional culture. Let students feel this culture through sports, then they will love it and pass it on," said Zhu Tianyu, deputy director of the Sports Department of UCAS.
From campus to inter‑university, from Chinese to international students, the dragon boat carried not just competition but a new channel for cultural and academic exchange.
Celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth month of the traditional Chinese calendar, the Dragon Boat Festival, also known as the Duanwu Festival, falls on June 19 this year.
During the festival, people usually take part in activities such as dragon boat races and eat zongzi, or sticky rice dumplings.
