Rescue operations are ongoing after Venezuela on Wednesday declared a state of emergency in response to strong earthquakes that could result in high casualties and extensive damage.
The U.S. Geological Survey reported a magnitude 7.1 quake at 22:04 GMT on Wednesday, followed just one minute later by an even stronger magnitude 7.5 tremor. Both struck near the coastal town of Moron, about 160 km west of Caracas, the capital city of Venezuela.
The quakes were shallow with a depth of 10 km, which may have intensified their destructive impact.
According to the country's acting President Delcy Rodriguez on Thursday, at least 32 people were killed and more than 700 others injured.
Footage captured by a China Media Group (CMG) reporter on Wednesday night in Los Palos Grandes, one of the hardest-hit areas in Caracas, showed a building that had completely collapsed. Firefighters, civil defense forces, and other rescuers were urgently conducting search and rescue operations at the site.
Fearing aftershocks, local authorities have urged residents not to return to their homes and to stay in open spaces overnight, according to the CMG reporter.
