China's domestically developed C909 aircraft has expanded its presence in the Southeast Asian market with new variants, achieving model diversification and marking a step toward serialized development.
The C909, formerly known as ARJ21, marked its first decade of commercial service on Saturday. The aircraft seats 78 to 97 passengers and has a range of 2,225 to 3,700 kilometers. It is designed for short and narrow runways and performs well in hot, high-altitude, and crosswind conditions.
Delivered to Indonesian airline TransNusa in December 2022, the C909 made its maiden overseas flight from Jakarta to Bali on April 18, 2023, launching international operations. As of June 2026, TransNusa has received a total of five C909 aircraft.
"Three years of operations have proven that the C909, as a regional passenger aircraft, is well adapted to Southeast Asia's hot and humid climate and archipelagic terrain," said Xiao Fangzhou, deputy general manager of Southeast Asia Office of Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China,. (COMAC).
Following TransNusa's successful operations, the C909 has expanded into the Lao and Vietnamese markets.
The C909 has also been introduced in various variants. On June 22, the first domestically made C909 business jet, the CBJ, began commercial service. This model features diverse cabin sections for relaxation, meetings, receptions, and dining, tailored to meet the needs of short- and medium-haul business travel.
"The CBJ meets the demands of business travelers for cabin privacy, ride comfort, and travel efficiency. Its commercial debut represents a significant step forward for China's commercial aircraft industry in the business aviation sector," said Dang Yabin, deputy chief designer of C909 derivatives at COMAC.
The C909 now comes in multiple variants, including medical, business, cargo, emergency command, and firefighting models.
