Germany set a new national heat record for the third day running on Sunday, with a weather station logging 41.7 degrees Celsius.
According to the German Weather Service, a weather station reading in Brandenburg hit 41.7 degrees Celsius at around 16:00 on Sunday.
The agency measured 41.3 degrees Celsius and 41.5 degrees Celsius on the previous two days. In Saxony, the town of Kubschutz recorded an overnight low of 29.4 degrees Celsius — the highest minimum temperature ever seen in the country.
Forecasters expect temperatures to fall from Sunday night, with storms and severe weather ahead.
The scorching heat drove many Germans to lakes and rivers over the weekend. But the fun turned deadly — police reported on Sunday at least 13 drowning deaths since June 26, including a six-year-old and an eight-year-old.
Leipzig's transport authority announced on Sunday that all tram services in the eastern German city were suspended until 03:30 on Monday, as the extreme heat had caused the sealant in the joints between the asphalt and concrete on the railway track to clump and expand.
