Two heatwaves in May and June caused an estimated 2,700 deaths in England and Wales, according to a UK study released Monday.

The study was conducted by Imperial College London, the Met Office and by the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. Researchers used historical mortality records to model heat-related deaths during the two extreme heat spells in England and Wales.

According to Clair Barnes, a research associate in extreme weather and climate change at Imperial College London, the findings serve as a stark warning that the UK is now facing genuinely dangerous heat.

The research showed that human-induced climate change has significantly intensified the heatwaves, driving up mortality risks. Barnes warned that the current temperatures are no longer just a concern for the elderly or those with underlying health conditions -- they now pose a real health risk to the general public.
