Humanoid robots are set to offer a helping hand by serving as official volunteers at the upcoming 2026 World Artificial Intelligence Conference, which will open in Shanghai on Friday, marking the first large-scale deployment of such robots at a major exhibition.
The four-day WAIC event, which also includes the High-Level Meeting on Global AI Governance, is themed "AI Partnership for a Brighter Future," and is bringing together 1,400 guests and over 1,000 participating enterprises and exhibitors from around the world.
The event will see around 60 robots stationed across multiple areas of the conference venue, taking on a range of duties including handling on-site visitor inquiries and providing guided tours of the vast exhibition zone.
This highlights the rapid development of these humanoids, who have gone from merely being exhibits on display at last year’s conference to now being put to work as official on-site service volunteers at this year's edition.
Designed to deliver high efficiency and endurance, the robots are fully equipped to handle a full day of public service and are programmed to perform self-charging in order to keep their power sufficiently topped up as required.

"They will handle on-site inquiries, as well as be on patrol and offer guided tour services from A to B. We will deploy roughly 60 robots to support the conference's public services, and this marks the first ever large-scale roll out of full-sized humanoid robots at a major exhibition of this scale," said Ren Shuxuan, a staff member at the Qingtianzu Robot Rental Platform.
The robots' ability to be trusted to deliver stable and competent on-site services is driven by the rapid advancement of contextual large models over the past year. These models integrate multimodal data including audio, visual and environmental inputs, significantly enhancing the interactive capabilities of robotic systems to respond and function in real-world scenarios.
Meanwhile, the conference will also shine a spotlight on other contextual intelligence applications beyond the embodied robotics sector. Among the attractions on show, a team from the prestigious Fudan University in Shanghai will showcase a 6-meter-long integrated model wall device, which can detect visitors' emotions in real time and deliver accurate cross-language interpretation even for ambiguous spoken expressions -- providing a potentially useful tool in cross-culture communications.
Industry representatives noted that the advancement of contextual intelligence in AI has broad application prospects across a wide range of scenarios, from entertainment productions to other creative uses.

China has hosted the WAIC for eight consecutive years, with the conference serving as a platform to not only showcase the latest tech advances but also forge global partnerships to help unlock AI's benefits for all.
