"The international community must anchor itself in the overarching direction of the two-State solution, pool greater efforts and take irreversible actions. Any arrangement or new mechanism must uphold the principle of 'Palestinians governing Palestine', respect the will of the Palestinian people, and advance rather than undermine the two-State solution. Any dangerous attempt to alter the territorial and demographic structure of Palestine will seriously erode the foundation of the two-state solution and must be firmly rejected."

China's envoy on Tuesday stressed ending hostilities and curbing violence as the overriding priority across the Middle East, noting that the region belongs to its people and must not become an arena for major power rivalry or a casualty of geopolitical maneuvering.

Sun Lei, Charge d'Affaires of China's Permanent Mission to the United Nations, made the statement during the UN Security Council's quarterly open debate on the Middle East and the Palestinian situation.

Ramiz Alakbarov, UN Deputy Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, briefed the council that the situation in the occupied Palestinian West Bank is deteriorating rapidly, with the entire occupied Palestinian territory facing severe challenges. He warned that the persistent worsening of the West Bank situation would make it impossible to carry out reconstruction efforts in Gaza.

Riyad Mansour, Permanent Observer of the State of Palestine to the United Nations, told the meeting that Israel is attempting to escalate tensions in the West Bank, and the international community must deliver a strong response.

Addressing the debate, Sun said the Palestinian question remains the core of Middle East issues and must never be overlooked or marginalized. Only a comprehensive, just and lasting solution to the Palestinian question can break the vicious cycle of recurring conflicts in the region and truly usher in the dawn of peace, he noted.

Sun pointed out that appalling settler violence in the West Bank has caused heavy civilian casualties and widespread property damage, as the occupying power accelerates settlement expansion to encroach on Palestinian land. Despite strong international appeals, the West Bank situation continues to deteriorate, a trend driven largely by the lack of investigation and accountability and the persistence of impunity, he added.

Any dangerous attempt to alter the territorial and demographic structure of Palestine will seriously erode the foundation of the two-state solution and must be firmly rejected," Sun said.

Turning to the renewed escalation of tensions in the Gulf region, Sun said that since the door to negotiation has been opened, it should never be closed, and peace efforts must not be abandoned as long as there is hope.

The immediate priority is to stay committed to resolving disputes through negotiation and return to implementing the consensus reached in the memorandum of understanding, Sun concluded.
