The death toll from a 7.7-magnitude earthquake off Indonesia’s Flores Island rose to 40 on Saturday, with 50 people injured as of 18:30 Jakarta time, Indonesia’s National Search and Rescue Agency said.

Suharyanto, head of Indonesia's National Disaster Management Agency, said about 2,000 residents had moved to nearby evacuation shelters.

Exclusive footage filmed by China Central Television (CCTV) in Maumere showed patients receiving treatment in makeshift beds and tents outside a hospital, while emergency responders cleared rubble from a damaged waiting area at Laurentius Say Port.

The China Earthquake Networks Center said the quake struck at 05:58 local time, at a depth of 20 km. It was felt across several towns on Flores Island, sending residents into the streets.

Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency reported several aftershocks of magnitude 5 or higher, including one measuring 6.2. A tsunami warning issued after the main quake was later lifted.

The Chinese Consulate General in Denpasar said three Chinese tourists suffered minor injuries while evacuating after the earthquake. One struck their head against a wall, while the other two suffered minor lower-back strains. All were in stable condition.

Indonesia sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire, where earthquakes and volcanic eruptions are frequent.

По меньшей мере 40 человек погибли в результате землетрясения магнитудой 7,7 и нескольких сильных афтершоков, произошедших у побережья острова Флорес на востоке Индонезии. Об этом сообщили 15 августа местные СМИ.

Глава Национального агентства по управлению стихийными бедствиями Сухарьянто в тот же день сообщил на пресс-конференции, что по состоянию на 15:00 15 августа еще два человека получили серьезные травмы, 11 – легкие, а около 2000 человек были эвакуированы.

Землетрясение с эпицентром недалеко от города Мбай в регионе Нагекео произошло рано утром в субботу. Впоследствии была объявлена угроза цунами, которая позже была отменена Агентством по метеорологии, климатологии и геофизике.

Агентство призвало жителей сохранять бдительность в связи с возможными афтершоками.

Спасательные бригады продолжают оценивать число жертв и масштабы ущерба в пострадавших районах. Информация будет обновляться по мере продолжения спасательных операций.
