China's consumer market maintained an innovation-driven, high-quality development trend in July, with steady market expansion and continuous quality improvement, according to data released by the Ministry of Commerce on Thursday.
Official data show that in the first seven months of 2026, total retail sales of consumer goods and services rose 2.6 percent year on year, while retail sales of consumer goods reached 28.77 trillion yuan (about 4.27 trillion U.S. dollars), up 1.2 percent from a year earlier. Excluding automobile sales, retail sales of consumer goods increased by 2.7 percent.
Product consumption continued to upgrade in July, with retail sales of goods rising 0.5 percent. Sales of necessities remained stable, while a number of upgraded product categories posted strong growth.
Retail sales of communication equipment, cultural and office supplies, and cosmetics among units above the designated size grew 20.4 percent, 7.4 percent, and 6.8 percent, respectively.
Service consumption emerged as a highlight, with summer demand fully unleashed. Retail sales of services increased by 5.0 percent in the first seven months, consistently outpacing the growth rate of goods retail.
Catering revenue rose 2.6 percent, while retail sales of tourism-related consulting and rental services, as well as cultural, sports, and leisure services, surged by over 10 percent. The summer box office was particularly strong, with total film ticket sales exceeding 5 billion yuan (about 742 million U.S. dollars) in July, a year-on-year increase of over 20 percent.
New forms of consumption also flourished, driven by the consumer goods trade-in program that fuels green and smart consumption.
In July, the retail penetration rate of new energy passenger vehicles hit another all-time high at 65.1 percent. The ministry's big data platform showed that sales of embodied intelligent robots on key platforms soared 95.1 percent year on year in July.
Rural consumption growth outpaced that of urban areas in the first seven months, as the urban-rural consumption structure kept optimizing. Retail sales of consumer goods in rural areas reached 3.8 trillion yuan (about 564 billion U.S. dollars) in the January-July period, up 2.4 percent year on year, 1.3 percentage points faster than the growth in urban areas.
County-level consumption markets gathered stronger momentum. Retail sales of consumer goods in counties and townships (covering town areas and rural regions) accounted for 39.1 percent of the national total, 0.3 percentage points higher than the same period last year.
