The U.S. should expect a tough response to its latest sanctions, a former commander of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said, warning that Iran has the capability to shut down the Strait of Hormuz and halt all oil shipments.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent on Monday threatened Iran with "an economic D-Day," announcing a wave of new sanctions aimed at further isolating the country.

In response, Hossein Kanani Moghaddam, a military analyst and former IRGC commander, outlined Iran's possible countermeasures.

"In my view, there will be three possible responses ahead. First, Iran could respond militarily to US escorts and American vessels in the region that are encircling our ships. Second, there is the possibility of a complete closure of the Strait of Hormuz -- meaning that no oil or gas would pass through the region. Third, countries allied with the United States, or other countries whose economies depend on the region, could exert pressure to make the United States halt these actions, back down, and implement Iran's proposals," he said.

"These sanctions will not go unanswered. We have various tools and deterrent capabilities in the Strait of Hormuz to close it and prevent even a single drop of oil from leaving. Les États-Unis devraient s’attendre à une riposte sévère à leurs dernières sanctions, a déclaré un ancien commandant du Corps des gardiens de la révolution islamique (CGRI) d’Iran, avertissant que l’Iran dispose de la capacité de fermer le détroit d’Ormuz et de bloquer toutes les livraisons de pétrole.

Le secrétaire américain au Trésor, Scott Bessent, a menacé lundi l’Iran d’"un jour J économique", annonçant une nouvelle vague de sanctions visant à isoler davantage le pays.

En réponse, Hossein Kanani Moghaddam, analyste militaire et ancien commandant du CGRI, a détaillé les contre-mesures possibles de l’Iran.

"À mon avis, trois réponses sont possibles. Premièrement, l'Iran pourrait riposter militairement contre les escortes américaines et les navires américains présents dans la région qui encerclent nos navires. Las declaraciones llegan después de que el secretario del Tesoro de Estados Unidos, Scott Bessent, anunciara una nueva oleada de sanciones dirigidas a aislar aún más a Irán, en lo que calificó como un "Día D económico".

En respuesta, el analista militar y excomandante del CGRI, Hossein Kanani Moghaddam, esbozó los posibles escenarios de represalia.

"En mi opinión, habrá tres posibles respuestas. Primero, Irán podría responder militarmente contra los buques de escolta y embarcaciones estadounidenses en la región que rodean a nuestros barcos. Segundo, existe la posibilidad de un cierre total del estrecho de Ormuz, lo que significaría que no pasaría petróleo ni gas por la región. Tercero, los aliados de Estados Unidos y otros países con economías dependientes de la región podrían presionar a Estados Unidos para que frene sus acciones, haga concesiones y adopte las propuestas de Irán", afirmó.

Moghaddam fue rotundo al advertir que las sanciones no quedarán impunes.

"Estas sanciones no quedarán impunes. Contamos con diversas herramientas y capacidad de disuasión en el estrecho de Ormuz para cerrarlo e impedir que salga ni una sola gota de petróleo. Si nosotros no podemos exportar petróleo, nadie más podrá hacerlo. Saben que tenemos esa capacidad. Esto afectaría a la economía regional y mundial. La crisis energética se agravaría. El petróleo, que en Estados Unidos cuesta alrededor de cinco dólares por galón, podría subir a siete u ocho dólares", agregó.
