Search operations are continuing off northern Cyprus after a ferry capsized on Sunday, killing at least eight people and leaving 18 others missing, as anger mounts over how the incident was allowed to happen.

The double-hulled ferry, carrying 259 passengers and eight crew members, began taking on water and capsized shortly after leaving the port of Kyrenia on Sunday afternoon, with the ship having since sunk to the bottom of the Mediterranean.

While the majority on-board were rescued, out at sea, aircraft and rescue crews are scanning the waters in a desperate search for those still missing.

Survivors have been describing the chaos which unfolded on board the vessel, as they explained just how quickly things went wrong.

"Then we hit a second wave, and when we hit the third wave, the boat started sinking. They directed everyone toward the back. They never told us to open the front door and get up onto the deck. They threw out the life rings, but they weren’t secured with ropes. Four life rings just drifted away," said Mehmet Ulas, a survivor from the ferry.

Investigators are looking into the safety failures which led to the tragic incident, with the vessel, the captain and the circumstances surrounding its departure all coming under scrutiny.

So far, nine people have been detained while inquiries continue, as investigators are now busy piecing together what happened before the vessel ever left port.

Suspects in the case were seen being led to police vehicles on Monday, but anger is growing among those who have lost loved ones, with many expressing their frustration over what they say is a lack of transparency.

Local authorities say all affected families have been contacted, but many unhappy relatives said they will continue chasing officials in the quest for answers.

"Unfortunately, they are making the immediate family members come to them at the embassy. They are saying, 'Come here, and we’ll give you an explanation.' They can’t even make the effort to come out and face these families. Let's be clear about this. They are afraid of something. There are things they are not telling us," said a relative of a missing crew member of the ferry.

The wreck is now believed to have settled more than 500 meters below the surface, far too deep for divers, with specialist equipment being brought in to conduct searches at this depth.

Las labores de rescate continúan frente a la costa norte de Chipre tras el naufragio de un ferry el domingo, un suceso que ha dejado al menos ocho personas fallecidas y otras 18 desaparecidas. Mientras los equipos de búsqueda peinan las aguas del Mediterráneo, la indignación no deja de aumentar entre los familiares de las víctimas, que exigen respuestas sobre cómo se permitió que ocurriera esta tragedia.

El ferry, de doble casco y con 259 pasajeros y ocho tripulantes a bordo, comenzó a hacer agua y zozobró poco después de zarpar del puerto de Kyrenia el domingo por la tarde. Desde entonces, el barco ha quedado sumergido en el fondo del mar.

Aunque la mayoría de los ocupantes fueron rescatados con vida, aeronaves y embarcaciones de salvamento siguen rastreando las aguas en una búsqueda desesperada por localizar a los desaparecidos.

Los supervivientes han comenzado a relatar el caos que se desató a bordo del ferry y la rapidez con la que la situación se tornó crítica.

Los investigadores están analizando ahora las posibles fallas de seguridad que provocaron el siniestro, y tanto el estado del buque como la actuación del capitán y las circunstancias previas a la partida del puerto están siendo sometidos a un riguroso escrutinio.

Hasta el momento, nueve personas han sido detenidas en el marco de la investigación, que intenta reconstruir lo sucedido antes de que el buque zarpara del puerto.

Sin embargo, la indignación crece entre los familiares de las víctimas, que denuncian falta de transparencia. Muchos de ellos han expresado su frustración ante lo que consideran una actitud evasiva por parte de las autoridades.

Por otro lado, los restos del ferry yacen ahora a más de 500 metros de profundidad, una cota inalcanzable para los buzos convencionales. Por ello, se ha movilizado equipo especializado para realizar inmersiones y operaciones de búsqueda a gran profundidad, en un intento por arrojar luz sobre las causas exactas de esta tragedia marítima que ha conmocionado a la región.
