Chinese tech giant Huawei unveiled its new Mate XT 2 tri-fold smartphone at a launch event in south China's Guangzhou on Monday, debuting the new Kirin 9050 Pro chip, the first high-performance processor to use logic folding technology.

The brand new chip arranges logic circuits in two vertical layers inside a single package, shortening signal transmission paths, reducing latency and delivering a 42-percent overall performance boost, according to developers.

This marks the first time Huawei has introduced a new Kirin chip at a flagship launch since the global release of the Mate 40 smartphone six years ago.

The company has continued to innovate and break new ground in recent years into technology-intensive fields, including artificial intelligence, chips, operating systems and smart vehicles, with its sustained research and development investment underpinning its long-term technological capabilities.

Huawei's research and development spending surged to a record 121.38 billion yuan (around 18 billion U.S. dollars) in the first half of 2026, accounting for more than a quarter of its overall revenue.

Huawei's smartphone shipments grew 19.4 percent year on year in the second quarter of this year, lifting its market share to 22.6 percent and the top position in China, according to the International Data Corporation (IDC).

Analysts say that at a time when the broader industry is under pressure, Huawei stands out as one of the few major vendors posting significant growth, evidence that its long-term bet on in-house technology is starting to pay off.
