Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi held talks with Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Qatar Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani in Beijing on Tuesday.

Wang, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, said China firmly supports Qatar in safeguarding its national sovereignty, independence, security and stability. He expressed confidence that Qatar would continue to support China on issues concerning its core interests.

Mutual political trust is a crucial foundation of the China-Qatar strategic partnership, Wang said, calling for expanded cooperation in conventional and new energy, investment, high technology and cultural exchanges.

Al Thani said Qatar firmly adheres to the one-China principle and opposes external interference in China's internal affairs. He said Qatar supports the global initiatives proposed by President Xi Jinping and is ready to strengthen communication and coordination with China at the United Nations and in other multilateral forums.

The two sides also exchanged views on the Middle East and the Gulf.

Wang said that continued tensions in the Gulf and the broader Middle East have seriously affected the security of countries across the region, while disrupting the stability of energy supplies, shipping routes and global supply chains. He said conflict and pressure cannot provide a solution, and that dialogue and negotiation are the right path forward.

Al Thani said Qatar was ready to strengthen coordination with China to help safeguard global energy routes and restore peace and stability in the region as soon as possible.
