Denza, a premium brand owned by Chinese carmaker BYD, on Wednesday opened the Denza Paris Opera House, a new 417-square-meter showroom and brand experience space in Paris, France, drawing political figures, business leaders and numerous electric vehicle enthusiasts.
Located in the city's 9th arrondissement, the new venue highlights the growing presence of Chinese automotive brands in the French market.
Xavier Iacovelli, vice president of the French Senate, shared his views on the trend.
"I think Chinese cars are becoming increasingly present in the European market, particularly because of their economic appeal and the prices offered by Chinese manufacturers to European consumers. This is why more and more Europeans are turning to Chinese models. As for the resistance we may see in Europe and among some automakers, I would not hide the fact that, as French lawmakers, we are also attentive to maintaining our industrial sector, particularly the French and European auto industries. But I think competition can also be a positive thing. If it can help our French and European automakers make progress, become more competitive, move into new technologies and reduce production costs, it will enable us to meet the growing demand from French and European consumers," said Iacovelli, who represents the Hauts-de-Seine department.
Beyond the industrial dimension, differences in consumer expectations are also shaping the automotive market, with European customers increasingly encountering features and technologies already common in Chinese vehicles.
Philippe Leitad, general manager of automotive service group Harmony Auto, said Chinese motorists have generally developed higher expectations for in-vehicle technologies.
"Chinese motorists are already accustomed to technological advances because you have an electrified vehicle fleet, unlike Europe. So today, I think Chinese consumers expect greater technological advances. Things are moving very, very fast in China. There is an innovation every day in China. In France, it is somewhat different," Leitad said.
The appeal of Chinese electric vehicles is already reflected in some French consumers' purchasing choices.
Gilles Poingt, general manager of French tech company Uxtech, is among those who have opted for a Chinese-made electric vehicle.
"I bought a Chinese electric vehicle on a whim because of its price-to-technology ratio, and I am very happy with it. That’s it. I hope I can continue to enjoy my vehicle for a long time," Poingt said.
