A sponge and plastic factory in Sanaa, the Houthi-held Yemeni capital, was completely destroyed on Monday after being hit by a missile in the latest escalation between the Saudi-led coalition and Houthi forces.

In the attack in the western Shemlan district of Sanaa, one of those involved in fighting the fire suffered severe burns, but the factory's 32 employees escaped harm as they were not present at the time of the strike.

"We originally had a factory that had been operating for years with more than 40 workers. In 2019, the factory was hit by an airstrike. We resumed operations in 2025 after purchasing new machinery and equipment, and invested a total of 1.5 million U.S. dollars to build the facility and install the equipment here. Now, the factory has been completely destroyed in this attack," said Zaid Al-Qasimi, the factory owner.

Yemen's conflict began in late 2014 when the Houthis seized the capital Sanaa and much of northern Yemen, prompting the Saudi-led coalition to intervene in March 2015 in support of the internationally recognized Yemeni government.

Yemen's economy had since been severely damaged. Many factories were forced to close and large numbers of workers were left unemployed, further worsening the humanitarian crisis. In April 2022, Yemen entered a fragile, phased ceasefire, bringing a brief easing of tensions, and some factory owners began repairing their facilities.

However, Yemen's conflict has recently entered one of its sharpest escalations in years, with heavy fighting spreading across southwestern Yemen and renewed missile, drone and air attacks reviving direct hostilities between the Houthis and Saudi Arabia.

There is growing concern that existing factories could become targets of attacks.
