The Gaza Strip is suffering heavy losses and facing an uncertain future three years into the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.

Wednesday marks the third anniversary of the Oct 7, 2023 attacks. Gaza is now devastated, with rubble strewn across much of the territory. Nearly 74,000 Palestinians have been killed and more than 174,000 injured, while around 90 percent of Gaza's civilian infrastructure has been destroyed.

Gaza's economy is also taking a heavy blow. Following the outbreak of the conflict in 2023, Palestinian gross domestic product (GDP) shrank significantly in 2024 and grew 4.3 percent on a low base in 2025, but still 20 percent below its 2022 level, according to a United Nations (UN) report released last month.

Across the occupied Palestinian territories, hundreds of thousands of jobs have been lost, resulting in an estimated total loss of labor income of 2.8 billion U.S. dollars. Approximately 92 percent of local economic entities have been damaged or destroyed.

Many of the businesses that once created jobs, produced goods and provided services no longer exist. Agriculture has been hit particularly hard, with only 1.5 percent of agricultural land in Gaza remaining accessible and undamaged. Many families have lost the land they depend on for survival, and local food supplies are increasingly reliant on external aid.

The unemployment rate in Gaza stands at 78 percent. More than half of the enclave's hospitals and primary care clinics are unable to function properly, while 93 percent of school facilities require complete reconstruction.

A brief ceasefire last year has not eased the situation or brought about a turning point. On Oct 8, 2025, under the pressure and mediation of Egypt, Qatar, Türkiye, the United States and other parties, Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas agreed to the first phase of a ceasefire proposed by the United States.

The main content of the agreement included both sides ceasing military operations; the Israeli army withdrawing to the outskirts of Gaza and declaring the end of the conflict; Israeli detainees and Palestinian prisoners being released; and humanitarian aid supplies entering the Gaza Strip on a large scale.

Although Hamas and Israel have accepted the ceasefire agreement, they remain divided on its content and implementation procedures. Therefore, both sides have not achieved a true ceasefire. Israel continues strikes on Hamas militants as Palestinian casualties continue to rise.

Gaza's future remains uncertain. In the past year, both the Israeli and Palestinian sides, as well as relevant parties involved in mediation, have put forward different plans and ideas regarding the governance and security arrangements for the enclave.

Israel vigorously excludes the post-war security arrangements and governance of Gaza that involve Hamas. The United States advocates for the establishment of an international organization led by the U.S. to take over and govern Gaza. The Palestinian National Authority insists on leading the post-war governance of Gaza. Under pressure, Hamas has stated that it can accept not participating in Gaza's management.

As Gaza spirals deeper into catastrophe and the conflict drags on, a lingering question remains: What future lies beyond war and hunger?

Hamas attacked Israel from Gaza On Oct 7, 2023 and killed about 1,200 people and taking 251 hostage, prompting Israel to launch a war on Hamas in Gaza.
