Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Sunday that Ukraine welcomes the immediate "energy ceasefire" announced by U.S. President Donald Trump, and is still awaiting the details from the American side.
On Sunday, Trump said that Russia and Ukraine had agreed to an immediate "energy ceasefire."
"Effective immediately," Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform, adding that "both parties have agreed."
Zelensky said that Ukraine "supports practical and reliable ways to achieve a ceasefire and end the war," and the Ukrainian side is "willing to refrain from striking Russian oil refineries and expects Russia to take the same action."
He said Trump had announced the energy ceasefire arrangement, which Ukraine welcomes and hopes will be genuinely implemented.
Zelensky also said that Ukrainian forces had received the relevant orders, and Ukraine is waiting for the specific details of the U.S.-Russia dialogue and expects Russian President Vladimir Putin to fulfill the relevant commitments mentioned by Trump.
In another development, British Defense Secretary Wes Streeting said on Sunday that Britain does not support Trump's deal with Putin to purchase millions of tons of diesel from Russia.
"We don't support that decision. As the prime minister set out, we are strengthening sanctions against Russia," Streeting said in an interview broadcast by the BBC.
He added that the deal was done "very much in the context of the U.S. midterm elections" in November and at a time when politicians worldwide were under pressure to ease the cost of living.
Trump's diesel agreement is aimed at lowering fuel prices in the United States, which have risen following the joint U.S.-Israel attacks against Iran, according to the BBC report.
On Friday, Washington announced measures to ease sanctions on Russian diesel trade.
Zelensky criticized the move, saying that allowing Russia to sell petroleum products would amount to investing in the war.
