A self-driving bus service in southern Chinese city of Guangzhou officially started its pilot application on Saturday, taking a big step to bring autonomous driving technologies into residents' daily life.
Commuters can directly hop on the self-driving bus, tap a bus card or scan to pay exactly like they do on a regular bus. On the city's international biological island, two driverless bus lanes are in service, carrying passengers who are keen to gain an early access.
"I came to the Shuimo Park for a walk, then I saw there is a driverless bus and I hopped on. It's my first time taking this kind of bus, the seats here are large and comfortable. Such buses have further facilitated our daily life," said Yu, a passenger.
The driverless buses, all equipped with a full stack hardware-software autopilot solution, can hit a top speed of 40 kilometers per hour. The electric buses are able to drive themselves safely and steadily on open road in urban areas even during traffic jam period.
"I take my child here to experience the difference between a regular bus and an autonomous driving bus, to help him gradually accept new things. Guangzhou's bus system operator said that a total of 50 autonomous driving buses are on the roads.
"The bus routes, vehicle allocation and departure density have reached the standard of conventional bus routes or convenience lines. For example, we guarantee to send out a bus every eight to 15 minutes in peak hours. The ticket fare is the same as convenience lines -- two yuan," said Feng Jiantao, Party secretary of Guangzhou No.4 Bus Company.
